Date Ideas in Birmingham: Canals and Culture

Canal walks, galleries with no entry fee and a tram home, from the Jewellery Quarter to Brindleyplace.

The short answer

For a first date in Birmingham that isn’t dinner, walk the canals from Gas Street Basin to Brindleyplace, spend an hour at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery or the Ikon Gallery (both have no entry fee), then wander the Jewellery Quarter or Digbeth.

Start with the canals. At their peak the Birmingham Canal Navigations covered about 160 miles, and Wikipedia says just over 100 miles are navigable today, mostly by narrowboats. Pick one idea, add a coffee and see how it feels. The date ideas hub has the other cities.

The main ideas

Six ways to spend an afternoon

  • Gas Street Basin

The Worcester and Birmingham Canal meets the BCN Main Line here, and a 7-foot-3-inch strip called the Worcester Bar still divides them, with boats moored along both sides. The basin sits between the Mailbox and Brindleyplace.

  • Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

In Chamberlain Square, with no charge for general admission and no booking needed. It opened in 1885, and its Staffordshire Hoard Gallery shows Anglo-Saxon gold found in 2009.

  • Ikon Gallery

Contemporary art in a Grade II listed Victorian school building at Brindleyplace. Entry has no fee and donations are welcome. It is open 11am to 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays.

  • The Jewellery Quarter

Wikipedia says it has the greatest concentration of jewellery-trade businesses in Europe. Jewellery Quarter station serves both the Metro and the main rail line, and the Chamberlain Clock dates from 1903.

  • Digbeth

Birmingham’s Creative Quarter. Street art, pop-up shops and craft beer venues have led to frequent comparisons with Shoreditch in London, says Wikipedia.

  • Cannon Hill Park

Covers 250 acres in Moseley, with boating, fishing, bowls, tennis, putting and picnic areas. MAC, the arts centre, opened in 1962 on the site of the park’s lido.

If it rains, if it’s late, if you’re short of time

It’s lateThe canalside at Brindleyplace, then the MetroWikipedia puts Brindleyplace within walking distance of bus, tram and rail routes, and the Metro keeps running past midnight.
You’re short of timeVictoria SquareA pedestrianised square with the Town Hall and the Council House, on the main pedestrian route between the Bull Ring and Brindleyplace.

After dark

Getting home from the city centre

  • Tram. The West Midlands Metro’s March 2026 timetable shows the last tram from Grand Central towards Wolverhampton at about 00:48 on weekdays and 01:18 on Saturdays. Towards Edgbaston and Brindleyplace the last tram is earlier, about 00:16 on weekdays and 00:46 on Saturdays. Evenings run every 15 minutes.
  • Bus. Transport for West Midlands says many key routes around the main centres run later into the night and the early hours. Its online planner shows live departures.
  • Taxi. Birmingham City Council says never to get into a private hire vehicle you haven’t booked through an operator, and to check it is the one you booked. It also points to marshalled taxi ranks at weekends.

Times change, so check the Metro’s own timetable on the day.

Birmingham date questions

What can we do in Birmingham if it rains?

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Ikon Gallery are the easy answers: both are indoors, and entry to each is at no charge. The museum has a Staffordshire Hoard Gallery, and Ikon shows contemporary art in a Victorian school building.

How late does the West Midlands Metro run?

The March 2026 timetable has the last tram from Grand Central towards Wolverhampton at about 00:48 on weekdays, 01:18 on Saturdays and 00:18 on Sundays. Trams towards Edgbaston leave earlier. Check the Metro’s own timetable before you rely on a late tram.

Is the Jewellery Quarter good for a first date?

It is easy to reach, because Jewellery Quarter station is on both the Metro and the main rail line. Wikipedia says it has the greatest concentration of jewellery-trade businesses in Europe, which gives you plenty of shop windows to talk about.

Is there a Birmingham date idea for Tolkien fans?

Sarehole Mill in Hall Green is a Grade II listed water mill, run as a museum by Birmingham Museums Trust. Tolkien lived within 300 yards of it as a boy and said he used it as the Mill at Hobbiton. Visits are by guided tour only, so check times and prices first.

Where in Birmingham should I meet a Forget Dinner match?

Choose somewhere public and busy, such as Victoria Square or the entrance to a gallery. Arrange your own way there and back, tell a friend your plan and keep early messages on the site until you have met.
