Date Ideas in Brighton: Sea Air and Easy Plans
Shingle, lanes and a pier, with a plan for every kind of weather and a night bus home.
Walk the Lanes and North Laine, stroll the seafront to the Palace Pier and go up the i360 near sunset. When it rains, try the Royal Pavilion or Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. Brighton & Hove Buses lists eight night routes for getting home.
Brighton lies between the South Downs and the English Channel, 47 miles south of London, with more than five miles of shingle beach to stroll along. The cards below are the things to do, and the table after them matches each to the hour and the weather. More cities sit on the date ideas hub, and what to wear on a first date is worth a glance before you set out.
Six ways in
Streets, sea and a long way up
The Lanes and North Laine
The Lanes are narrow alleys famous for small shops, antiques among them. North Laine, just north, is the bohemian and cultural quarter, with independent shops, cafes and a museum. Neither needs a plan, which is the point.
The Royal Pavilion
A Grade I listed seaside palace begun in 1787 for the future George IV, with Mughal-style domes and minarets. The trust sells tickets on its site, so check the price first.
Palace Pier
Opened in 1899 and Grade II* listed. The pier’s own page lists £1 admission at peak times from March to October, and says charging stops once the rides and kiosks start closing in the evening.
The i360
A viewing pod rises 138 metres on a 162-metre tower, with views over the town, the Downs and the Channel. Tickets are sold by the operator, so check the price and go near sunset.
Up on the Downs
The Breeze 77 bus runs from the Palace Pier to Devil’s Dyke, a valley 100 metres deep five miles out. The Breeze 78 runs from Old Steine to Stanmer Village, in a park on the edge of the Downs.
Along the seafront
Volk’s Electric Railway has run along the front since 1883, on a line about a mile long, though not usually in winter. The Fishing Museum, in two beach arches on King’s Road, lists entry as no charge, with donations welcome.

Meeting someone from Forget Dinner
Forget Dinner has members in and around Brighton. For a first meeting, the Clock Tower, built in 1888 for Queen Victoria’s jubilee, is hard to miss and right in the middle of town. Keep your first messages on the site, tell a friend where you’ll be and fix your own way home rather than sharing one.
An hour is a fine first date, and you can always add a second. The safety page lists the site’s tools, and singles near you shows who is around.
The age mix below covers the whole UK, where women are almost as numerous as men.

After dark
Getting home from a Brighton date
Brighton & Hove Buses lists eight night services on its website: the N1, N5, N7, N12, N14, N25, N29 and N48. The N7 links Hove and Brighton Marina, the N12 and N14 run east to Eastbourne and Seaford, and the N25 reaches the universities. A night bus map sits on the same page; days and times vary by route, so check yours.
Trains leave Brighton station frequently, for London and along the coast, though last trains differ by line. Settle your route home before you settle on a time.
