Date Ideas in Southampton: Start at the Waterfront

A day that starts at the water and works inland: walls, museums, parks and a night bus home.

The short answer

Start on the waterfront at Town Quay or Ocean Village, walk the medieval walls up to the Bargate, give an hour to SeaCity Museum or the City Art Gallery, then finish in the parks. Bluestar night buses run on three routes seven nights a week.

Southampton is a port city where the Test and the Itchen meet, so it makes sense to begin with water in view. Follow the plan below from top to bottom, or lift out a single stop. More cities sit on the date ideas hub, and the daytime date ideas guide covers lighter plans.

One day, five stops

A day that works inland from the water

  1. The waterfront

Town Quay is the original public quay and dates from the 13th century. At Ocean Village the marina has 375 berths, and the tourist board says a stroll along it costs nothing. Cruise liners come and go, and Cunard sails a regular service to New York from the city.

  2. The medieval walls

The old town was once ringed by about 1.25 miles of wall, with 29 towers and eight gates. Begin at the Bargate, a medieval gatehouse in the middle of town, and follow the walls along the Esplanade towards Town Quay. The tourist board offers a map and audio guide with no entry fee.

  3. The Old Town

God’s House Tower is a late 13th-century gatehouse, now an arts and heritage venue. Tudor House and Garden on Bugle Street was Southampton’s first museum, in 1912. Both are Grade I listed and handsome from the pavement if you’re short on time.

  4. The civic centre

SeaCity Museum, in the Grade II* listed civic centre, tells the Titanic story and the city’s role as a gateway to the world. Southampton City Art Gallery in the same building has no entry fee. Pick one and keep it to an hour.

  5. The parks

Palmerston, Houndwell, Watts and East Parks form a green ribbon of Victorian parks, with flower beds, fountains and sculptures. Further out, Southampton Common covers 148 hectares, with an Ornamental Lake and a seasonal paddling pool.

For the gaps

Smaller ideas when you have an hour

  • Winkle Street faces

Sculpted faces are hidden in the walls and signs of Winkle Street. The tourist board says there is no map: wander down it and count how many you can find.

  • The Titanic trail

Southampton was home to many of the passengers and crew on the Titanic’s maiden voyage, and memorials are dotted around the city. The tourist board has a map to download.

  • The Jane Austen trail

A self-guided heritage walk created in 2017 visits places she frequented in the city. It hands you a ready-made route and plenty to talk about.

  • The rain plan

SeaCity Museum, Tudor House and Garden and the City Art Gallery are all indoors. The first two normally charge, except on special open days, so check prices first.

After dark

Getting home from a Southampton date

Bluestar runs a night network called Nightstar. Three routes run seven nights a week: the N2 through Portswood, Highfield and Swaythling, the N17 through the city centre, Woolston and Weston, and the N18 through Shirley, Bitterne and Thornhill. The N1 to Winchester and the N9 to Fawley run on Friday and Saturday nights.

On Bluestar’s own page a single trip on any of them is £3, you tap on and off, and period passes and dayriders aren’t valid. Use the timetable or the Bluestar app for exact times.

Southampton date questions

What can we do in Southampton on a first date that isn’t dinner?

Stroll the waterfront at Ocean Village, walk the medieval walls from the Bargate, spend an hour at SeaCity Museum or the City Art Gallery, or take a turn round the Central Parks. Each has a natural ending.

Are there night buses in Southampton?

Yes. Bluestar’s Nightstar network has five routes. The N2, N17 and N18 run seven nights a week, while the N1 to Winchester and the N9 to Fawley run Friday and Saturday. Check the timetable before you set a time.

Which Southampton places have no entry fee?

Visit Southampton says the City Art Gallery has no entry charge, and walking the medieval walls costs nothing. SeaCity Museum and Tudor House and Garden normally charge, apart from occasional open days, so check before you plan around them. More in cheap date ideas.

Where should I meet someone in Southampton?

The Bargate, a medieval gatehouse in the middle of town, is a landmark nobody gets wrong, and the walls give you somewhere to keep moving. Town Quay works too. Tell a friend where you are, and keep your own way home.
