Date Ideas in Liverpool: Sea Air and Art

Walk the waterfront, cross the Mersey or spend a wet afternoon in a gallery: Liverpool dates that don’t need a table.

The short answer

Walk from Pier Head to the Royal Albert Dock, cross the Mersey on the ferry, spend a wet afternoon in the Walker Art Gallery or World Museum, and keep Crosby Beach’s iron figures for a clear evening. Easy to start, easy to leave.

Liverpool’s date material is water, stone and sea air, which suits anyone who would rather talk than order. Pick by the clock and the weather below, and see date ideas in other UK cities if you are travelling.

Three bigger dates

  • Cross the water

Ferries have run between Liverpool, Birkenhead and Wallasey since at least the 12th century, and Merseytravel operates them today. Check sailing times and fares first, then enjoy a conversation with a view.

  • Crosby Beach

Antony Gormley’s Another Place is 100 cast-iron figures, cast from the artist’s own body, gazing out to sea. Sefton Council calls it a non-bathing beach with soft sand, mud and changing tides, so stay within 50 metres of the promenade. Merseyrail serves Blundellsands and Crosby.

  • Hope Street

It links the Metropolitan Cathedral, built from 1962 to 1967 and nicknamed Paddy’s Wigwam, with the Anglican cathedral, which took from 1904 to 1978. About half a mile apart, and a fine walk for anyone who likes a slow build.

After dark

Getting home from Liverpool at night

The N1 night bus: Merseytravel runs it between Birkenhead and Allerton Library, via the city centre. It leaves from about 12.30am and runs hourly until around 5am, Thursday night through Saturday night. Merseytravel calls it a trial, so check the current timetable.

Merseyrail has two lines, Northern and Wirral, and the last trains vary, so look before you leave the house. Merseytravel’s own advice is to check the last buses and trains, wait in a well-lit spot near other people, and tell someone when and where you are travelling.

For taxis, the council lists hackney stands at Bold Street, Lime Street station and the Albert Dock, though it says the list is under review. The government’s standards for England say a private hire car must be pre-booked with a licensed operator, and that you should confirm the booking with the driver, note the licence number and sit in the back.

Before you go

Meeting someone from Forget Dinner

Members use Forget Dinner across Liverpool and Merseyside, so you can pick a place roughly halfway; singles near you shows who is close. Keep talking on the site until you have settled a time and place. A warning appears if anyone tries to move you to another messaging app, and it is worth heeding. Chat first, meet second.

Tell a friend the plan. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, a UK personal safety charity, suggests carrying money for a taxi or planning a public transport route, and not sharing a taxi home with someone you do not know yet. The waterfront is public and easy to leave, which makes it a sensible first stop. The safety page covers the site’s own tools.

Liverpool date questions

What is a cheap first date in Liverpool?

Walk Pier Head to the Royal Albert Dock, then give an hour to the Walker Art Gallery, World Museum or Museum of Liverpool, none of which charges to get in. For anything ticketed, such as the ferry, check the price first. There are more ideas in our cheap date ideas guide.

Where can we go in Liverpool when it rains?

The Walker Art Gallery, World Museum and Museum of Liverpool are all indoors with no entry fee, and the Bluecoat arts centre occupies the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool. Bold Street, mostly pedestrianised, is the next stop if you want a wander.

How do I get home from a Liverpool date at night?

Merseytravel’s N1 night bus links Liverpool and Wirral from about 12.30am at weekends, though it is a trial, so check the timetable. Merseyrail covers the rest of Merseyside until its last train. A licensed taxi, or a pre-booked private hire car, is the backup.

Is Crosby Beach a good first date?

It can be, in good light. Sefton Council says to stay out of the sea and within 50 metres of the promenade at all tides, because of soft sand, mud and changing tides. Check tide times, dress for wind, and use the Blundellsands and Crosby station end.

Can I meet someone from Forget Dinner in Liverpool?

Yes, the site has members across Liverpool and Merseyside. Chat first, meet somewhere public, tell a friend your plans and arrange your own way home. You can block or report anyone at any point, and nobody has to meet anybody.
