Dating, grown up
Dating in Your 30s and 40s: What Changes
Busier lives, longer histories and, often, a clearer idea of what you want. Here’s how to make that work for you.
Dating in your 30s and 40s is different rather than harder. You have less spare time, more history and sometimes children, but you can say what you want plainly and ask others to do the same. Go at your own pace, be upfront about casual or serious, and meet somewhere public first.
What changes
Four things that really change
If you worry that dating over 40 means arriving late, the numbers are kinder than the worry. In a 2022 Pew Research Center survey of US adults, 37% of those aged 30 to 49 and 20% of those aged 50 to 64 had used a dating site or app.
Time is tighter
Work, family and friends fill the diary. A drink after work or a Saturday walk fits better than a booked evening. Keep it local: the daily match suggestions weigh distance, so you can look for singles near you and keep dates close to home.
Everyone has a past
Expect history on both sides. Relate, the counselling charity, notes that responsibility for a split is usually at least partly shared, which is a kinder way to read your story and theirs.
Children are part of it
The ONS counted 3.2 million lone-parent families in the UK in 2025, 16.0% of all families. With or without children of your own, expect to meet people who have them.
You know more about what you want
You probably have a short list of things you want and a shorter one you won’t accept. Use it, and say so early.
Flirting changes too. In Jeffrey Hall’s research, people aged 40 and over were most likely to prefer a polite style: cautious, courteous and slow to say outright that they are interested. A careful message in your forties may be interest in a quiet voice. How to flirt explains how to read it.
The good news
What gets easier
- Saying what you want. Healthline advises mentioning it when you start seeing someone, and asking about their goals too.
- Dating without a deadline. Relate says that once you stop worrying about where dating is going, it can be “a fun, useful and exciting experience”.
- Picking the kind of dating. Forget Dinner asks what you are looking for, and the daily match suggestions weigh the answer.
- Not being the odd one out. Around six in ten members are in the 35 to 54 age range, and UK women and men are in roughly equal numbers.
Casual dating
Where casual dating fits
Casual dating is a mainstream reason to use a dating site at any age. In a 2022 Pew Research Center survey of US adults, 40% of users said a major reason was to date casually, and users aged 50 and over were as likely as younger ones to say so.
Healthline describes casual dating as dates, regular contact and firm plans, loosely defined, and notes it doesn’t have to mean sex. To see where people go for it, try the best casual dating apps in the UK. A situationship is different mainly because nobody has agreed what it is.
Say it early
Mention what you want and ask about theirs.
Check in
If your wishes change, tell them. Casual dating suits some people and not others.
Finish kindly
If you stop wanting to see someone, say so briefly. A text beats silence.
Starting again
After a split, and with children
Dating in your 30s after divorce, or in your 40s after years with one person, can feel like starting from scratch. You’re bringing everything you’ve learned, and you set the speed.
Take the time you need
Relate says there is no obligation to make a move until you feel comfortable, and that you may never feel completely confident. The psychologist Gregory Matos, writing in Psychology Today in July 2026, says no evidence supports waiting a year and suggests asking why you want to date: to feel attractive, because you are lonely, or to get back at an ex.
Talking about your ex
Keep it short and fair. A 2015 review in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine linked avoiding criticism with online chat that led to a meeting, and Relate notes that responsibility for a split is usually at least partly shared. “We wanted different things” is enough for a first date.
If you have children
Coram Family Lives, a UK parenting charity, tells single parents to take things slowly and suggests getting to know someone well before any introductions. The terms ban references to anyone under 18 in posted content, profiles included, and RAINN advises parents to keep their children’s names, ages and schools private. Mention your availability instead, and talk about family when the conversation is going well.
Your pace
Safety and pace
Your pace sets the terms: nobody is owed a quick reply, a second date or an answer today. These habits keep it that way.
- ChatOn the site until you’re sure
- MeetSomewhere busy and well lit
- TellA friend: who, where, when
- TravelYour own way there and back
- ShareNot your address or workplace
Those habits come from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, a UK personal safety charity, and RAINN. The NHS lists having sex with new partners as a reason to visit a sexual health clinic, and our sexual health checks guide explains how. Forget Dinner has optional ID verification, blocking and a warning when someone tries to move the chat to another app, so you can chat with singles without swapping numbers early. See the safety page, and read how to spot a dating scam before anyone asks you for money.
Questions about dating in your 30s and 40s
Is dating harder in your 40s?
It’s different. You probably have less spare time and more history than at 25, but also a clearer idea of what you want and a better ear for what you don’t. Short, easy first meetings and an honest profile do most of the work.
Can you date in your 40s?
Yes. Nothing about turning 40 closes the door, and dating sites aren’t only for the young: the Pew Research Center’s 2022 US survey found them used well beyond the under-30s. On Forget Dinner you can say what you are after, from something casual to good company.
How soon can you start dating after a divorce?
There’s no set time. A 2026 Psychology Today article by the psychologist Gregory Matos says no evidence supports the wait-a-year rule and suggests asking why you want to date. Relate adds that you need not make a move until you feel comfortable. When you’re ready, go slowly.
Is dating in your 30s different as a woman or a man?
Some experiences differ. In a 2022 Pew Research Center survey of US adults, 56% of women under 50 who had used dating sites or apps had been sent an explicit message or image they didn’t ask for, and 63% of men of that age who had used them thought they had met a scammer. Block, report and go slowly.
Should I mention my children on my profile?
The terms don’t allow references to anyone under 18 on a profile, and RAINN advises parents to keep their children’s names, ages and schools private. Mention your availability instead, such as weekday evenings, and say you’re a parent when the conversation is going well.
